The White House has invited leaders from about 200 nonprofits to Washington to take part in a daylong program that will focus on the role of nonprofits and how charities can develop effective leaders.

The event, which takes place Tuesday at the national office of the American Red Cross and is closed to the public, will feature discussions led by White House officials and business and nonprofit leaders.

Charitable Deduction Not Discussed at Deficit Talks - Government & Politics Watch - The Chronicle of Philanthropy- Connecting the nonprofit world with news, jobs, and ideas: Republican members of the congressional deficit committee are discussing plans that would limit some tax breaks to help close the federal deficit, The New York Times reports. But a top Congressional aide says lawmakers have not been talking about placing any limits on charitable deductions.

The committee is working to trim more than $1.2-trillion from the federal deficit over 10 years.

As we have noted before, we hope that the nonprofit sector is making a coherent and noticeable case to the supercommittee amid the hundreds of thousands of dissonant recommendations that have flooded in. And even if the sector does have a coherent, resonant message, will it be heard given the cacophony of monied interests laying siege to supercommittee members?

The Australian government has launched a consultation on a new statutory definition of charity, applicable across all Commonwealth laws from July 1, 2013.

The Australian government announced in the 2011-12 Budget that it would introduce a new statutory definition of charity, and a Consultation Paper has subsequently been released outlining the background, including previous recommendations and inquiries, as well as developments that have occurred since 2003, when the issue was last substantially examined.
