Local: State auditor says most people don't know what his office does : ENCToday: "Near the top of his achievement list is dealing with reporting by nonprofit groups.

He credits the General Assembly for passing 2004 legislation providing for closer monitoring of nonprofit organizations.

'We're doing a better job of training the nonprofit agencies and verifying that they are they are being properly monitored,' he said. 'They may not sound big, but there are thousands of nonprofits.'"

Until now, charitable organizations created for religious, educational, scientific or other philanthropic purposes had to formally file applications to operate tax-exempt with both the Internal Revenue Service and the state Franchise Tax Board. If approved, the group would get a 'determination letter' granting them tax-exempt status."
