Counties face bingo regulation challenges | TuscaloosaNews.com

Counties face bingo regulation challenges | TuscaloosaNews.com: "The fate of a proposed constitutional amendment to transfer regulatory oversight of bingo in Greene County could hinge on a similar measure proposed for Macon County.

Both measures would put an existing racing commission in charge of bingo in those counties, instead of the sheriff.

Voters in Greene and Macon counties approved local constitutional amendments in 2003 that authorized nonprofit organizations to operate bingo and electronic bingo games in those counties. Though not identical, each amendment gave broad powers to the sheriff to implement regulations and determine which nonprofits would be licensed. The amendments stated the nonprofits would operate bingo games, not lease them to a contractor."

No good deed goes unpunished?

No good deed goes unpunished?: "Are some charities more worthy than others? This seems to be the implication of a bill before the state Legislature that would require philanthropic foundations to document the so-called diversity of the charities they support. The inference is that the more diverse a charity's board of directors and staff, the more worthy it is of philanthropic funding."

The Daily Californian

The Daily Californian: "t used to be that the act of giving to a charity itself ranked pretty high on the scale of the politically correct. But times have changed-a bill passed by the State Assembly and en route to the Senate makes it clear that it's not good enough to give: You've got to give to the right people.

AB 624, the brainchild of the Berkeley-based Greenlining Institution and introduced by Assemblymember Joe Coto (D-San Jose), requires charitable foundations with more than $250 million in assets to disclose the race, gender and sexual orientation of their board members on their Web sites."
